EPEL 7 Development

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Hi All,

Yesterday we opened up epel7 for people to request branches and
contribute to there is a FAQ[1]. The things to note at this point in
time. epel7 is working like rawhide with daily automated composes, we
will endevour to sign all packages but as with any disjointed process
there could be packages missed. The git branch, tagging in koji and
packagedb all use epel7, to support this we needed a minor change to
fedpkg you will need to make sure you have fedpkg-1.15-1 installed, its
currently in updates-testing for fedora 19 and el6 and was not
backported to fedora 18.

you can request your package be branched for epel by filling in the
table at the request page[2]. The list will be processed regularly you
will get emails from packagedb when it is done, additionally you can
also use bugzilla but thats a little more tedious and results in extra
bugzilla noise. closer to going stable we will shut off request via the
wiki.

To see if a package you are interesting in maintaing the full list of
package names in the public beta is also in the wiki[3].

Thanks to everyone that helps with epel7

Dennis

Fedora Server PRD Draft and call for participation

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

The first deliverable that the Fedora Server Working Group was tasked
with was the production of a Product Requirements Document. This
document is intended to provide a high-level view of the goals and
primary deliverables of the Fedora Server distribution. A great deal
of discussion has gone on during the weekly Working Group meetings as
well as on the mailing list.

At this time, the deadline for the delivery of the PRD is rapidly
approaching. Originally it was due to be delivered for ratification on
Monday, January 13th, but at the FESCo meeting on Wednesday, it was
agreed to delay this deadline by a single week. The primary reason for
this delay was so that the Fedora Cloud and Fedora Server groups could
have some last discussions about overlap and respective areas of
responsibility.

This past Tuesday, we had an all-day PRD hackfest in IRC and have come
up with a fairly strong draft[1]. It is not yet complete (notably,
there remains a FIXME under "Misc. Concerns" and some ambiguity around
the Use Cases), but I believe that it is close enough to its final
form (as envisioned by those people that have contributed to it), that
we should expose this document to the wider world and ask for input
before submitting it to the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee and
Fedora Advisory Board a week from Monday.

Please read through the PRD draft and provide feedback of any sort. If
you see that we have missed or misrepresented any of our statements,
we would very much like to hear this soon.

Move of freetype's header files

As of freetype 2.5.1, freetype's upstream has moved all header files
from /usr/include/freetype/freetype2/ and /usr/include/ft2build.h to
/usr/include/freetype2/.

I plane to push freetype 2.5.2 to master at the end of the next week
(#1034065).

If your packages use freetype as documented then you are ok but in
opposite case you'll need to change the path (see
http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/freetype-devel/2013-11/msg00074.html).

I've created a scratch build of the new freetype, you can get it here:
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=6384445
or here:
http://mkasik.fedorapeople.org/freetype-2.5.2/

Marek

openssl vulnerabilities
==========================================================================

A security issue affects these releases of Ubuntu and its derivatives:

- Ubuntu 13.10
- Ubuntu 13.04
- Ubuntu 12.10
- Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Summary:

Several security issues were fixed in OpenSSL.

Software Description:
- openssl: Secure Socket Layer (SSL) cryptographic library and tools

Details:

Anton Johansson discovered that OpenSSL incorrectly handled certain invalid
TLS handshakes. A remote attacker could use this issue to cause OpenSSL to
crash, resulting in a denial of service. (CVE-2013-4353)

Ron Barber discovered that OpenSSL used an incorrect data structure to
obtain a version number. A remote attacker could use this issue to cause
OpenSSL to crash, resulting in a denial of service. (CVE-2013-6449)

Dmitry Sobinov discovered that OpenSSL incorrectly handled certain DTLS
retransmissions. A remote attacker could use this issue to cause OpenSSL to
crash, resulting in a denial of service. (CVE-2013-6450)

This update also disables the default use of the RdRand feature of certain
Intel CPUs as the sole source of entropy.

Update instructions:

The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following
package versions:

Ubuntu 13.10:
libssl1.0.0 1.0.1e-3ubuntu1.1

Ubuntu 13.04:
libssl1.0.0 1.0.1c-4ubuntu8.2

Ubuntu 12.10:
libssl1.0.0 1.0.1c-3ubuntu2.6

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS:
libssl1.0.0 1.0.1-4ubuntu5.11

After a standard system update you need to reboot your computer to make
all the necessary changes.

puppet regression
==========================================================================

A security issue affects these releases of Ubuntu and its derivatives:

- Ubuntu 13.10
- Ubuntu 13.04
- Ubuntu 12.10
- Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Summary:

USN-2077-1 introduced a regression in Puppet.

Software Description:
- puppet: Centralized configuration management

Details:

USN-2077-1 fixed a vulnerability in Puppet. The upstream patch introduced a
regression resulting in the default file mode being incorrect. This update
fixes the problem.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Original advisory details:

It was discovered that Puppet incorrectly handled temporary files. A local
attacker could possibly use this issue to overwrite arbitrary files. In the
default installation of Ubuntu, this should be prevented by the Yama link
restrictions.

Update instructions:

The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following
package versions:

Ubuntu 13.10:
puppet-common 3.2.4-2ubuntu2.3

Ubuntu 13.04:
puppet-common 2.7.18-4ubuntu1.4

Ubuntu 12.10:
puppet-common 2.7.18-1ubuntu1.5

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS:
puppet-common 2.7.11-1ubuntu2.7

In general, a standard system update will make all the necessary changes.

This of course was wrong (copy & paste from an earlier mail). As written
earlier in that mail, there are two open seats, so the following is
correct:

This election cycle will fill two elected seats for the Board (seats E1,
and E2). Two appointed seats (A1 and A2) will also be filled this cycle.

Sorry for the confusion, thanks to inode0 for pointing out the error.

Best regards,
Christoph

Fedora 21 election season has begun!

My fellow Fedorians,

It's time for the Fedora 21 elections. In fact, we are already a little
late: First Fedora 20 was delayed and then we had the holiday season, so
we needed to adjust the schedule a little.

== Election Schedule ==

The Fedora 21 election schedule looks as follows:

* January 8 - 13: Nomination Period
(closes promptly at 23:59:59 UTC on January 13)
* January 8 - 13: Questionnaire form open for the community to
submit questions for the candidates.
* January 13 - 18: Candidates Questionnaire. Results will be
posted to the wiki prior to the first townhall
* January 18 - 23: Townhalls
* January 23 - 30: Voting Period
(closes promptly at 23:59:59 UTC on January 30)
* January 31: Announce Results

== Fedora Board, FESCo, and FAmSCo Elections ==

This election cycle will fill the following seats for a one-year period:

* Fedora Board: 2 elected seats (2 additional seats will be
appointed according to schedule)
* FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee): 4 elected seats

== Help us! ==

In order to make these elections a success, we need your help:

* First and foremost, we need you to vote.
* Tell others community members to vote.
* Ask questions in the elections questionnaire.
* Run for one of the elected bodies. With the new working groups
and CentOS as our new family member, we have exciting times
ahead. You can shape the future of Fedora and it's community!
* Encourage others that they feel would represent Fedora well to
run for election.
* Attend the townhall IRC meetings and ask the candidates your
questions.
* Volunteer to host the townhalls. We strive to have two meetings
for each body, that means six in total. I would appreciate your
help.

If you want to help out of have any further questions, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,
Christoph Wickert

OpenBSD: A Crash Course, Brian Callahan

Abstract

With issues of privacy and security occupying the forefront of recent
international news, a reexamination of the technologies used in one's
personal and professional infrastructure is essential.

This talk will highlight why OpenBSD should be at the forefront of these
reexaminations. Whether you are a long time *BSD user or are completely
new to *BSD, you will discover why OpenBSD excels in these areas and why
its security reputation is well deserved.

Speaker Bio

Brian is a graduate student at Monmouth University studying
Anthropology. He is an OpenBSD developer, working primarily on ports.
